Eco-Friendly Cleaning Alternatives

By Luke Armstrong

The modern household uses way too many petroleum-based cleaning products that possess questionable benefits and the possibility of harm for the environment and the health of the people who use them. A lot of the drain cleaners out there tend to be absolutely terrible for the environment, so you would do well to avoid them as much as you can when you work on cleaning your home. Although they tend to be pretty efficient at breaking down blockages in drains, they also tend to be a horrible cocktail of caustic chemicals that may easily be avoided if you know what you’re doing, as they will end up in the local groundwater and soil or all the way into the sea. There are many alternatives which do the same job but in a much safer way:

• Green products
The growing awareness of the ecological issues the world is facing today means a heightened presence of eco-friendly cleaning products on the market. They have been adapted by offering a lot of good biodegradable solutions for your needs, especially when it comes to nontoxic alternatives. If you really don’t like using commercial chemicals, then you will need to look for other alternatives in the face of borax, baking soda, distilled white vinegar and other solutions which make home cleaning work just as well.

• Keeping your home ventilated
Many people tend to believe that air-conditioned homes get enough fresh air to keep the home well-ventilated. Well that is hardly the case, as there are many toxic materials still present in our homes every day. Their levels are low for the most part, but the need for direct fresh air from the outside is often underestimated. Each time you move around your home you create invisible dust eddies you simply aren’t aware of, so cleaning, vacuuming and mopping your floors, carpet cleaning and more must become second nature to you.

• Using baking soda
You may use it for cleaning purposes, but there is more to it than meets the eye, as it also has excellent scent-absorbing qualities if you know where to use it. You can use it quite a few ways, from sprinkling it on your carpets to absorb offensive smells and then vacuuming to using it scrub surfaces or even unclog drains when used in tandem with distilled white vinegar.

• Using natural scents
Commercial air fresheners will contain a mix of chemicals meant to synthesize and imitate the natural scents in most areas as a way of producing them with cheaper results, but in the end nothing will be able to replace the actual and pleasant smell of the real deal. You can use a number of solutions to freshen up the air, from cinnamon to cloves, geraniums and many other solutions that get the job done.

• Disposing of toxic cleaners
You should avoid simply tossing them away, as they will only end up in the environment. Look for recycling centers and places you can use to get rid of them safely.
