How to remove rust stains from bathroom areas

By Luke Armstrong

Brown stains in the bathroom? They’re never good to look at, especially when such marks are visible to guests.

Since rust thrives in environments where water residue and air moisture are always present, the typical bathroom becomes a breeding ground for rust, especially in obscure areas, such as beneath the basin or bath.

Regular house cleaning that includes bathroom mopping is actually contributing to the increase of moisture and appearing of rust stains. It’s true that other stains can be removed with mopping and wiping but cleaning solutions such as chlorine bleach actually contribute to rust stains, especially in a bathroom with little ventilation.

So, first of all, don’t attempt to remove any rust marks with chlorine bleach. Secondly, when cleaning the bathroom consider the following alternative options.

Since we’re discussing bathroom cleaning, why not start by addressing how to clean rust in a porcelain bathtub. No need to go and buy new cleaning products, because you likely already have what you need in the kitchen. In other words, go and grab that baking soda, vinegar and scrub sponge. The one thing you might have to buy is just a pumice stone. Why pumice stone? Because it doesn’t scratch the porcelain.

Now all you have to do is apply some basic physics of your own in performing quick stress-free scrubbing, assisted by the chemical reactions sparking beneath your sponge. Whip up a simple paste of baking soda and vinegar, the two main catalysts in breaking down rust, and you’re ready to proceed in 6 very easy steps. Still skeptical? Follow the simple guide below and see:

How to remove rust stains from your bathtub

All you need to do prior to performing the treatment is ensure that your paste is ready, the basic set of tools mentioned above are at hand, and know that you will not be able to take a bath in the next hour.

Rust stains cleaning

1 – Wet the entire area

Use hot water and spread it around the bathtub.

2 – Prepare the area with pumice

Take the pumice stone and lightly rub the stained area. Although it’s abrasive, the pumice won’t mark your porcelain surface.

3 – Apply paste to the sponge

Apply the prepared baking soda and vinegar paste to the coarse scrub sponge. Ensure that ample paste is absorbed into the sponge.

4 – Rub the area in circular motions with the sponge

In performing the most crucial step, simply rub the area in circular motions with the paste-filled sponge. Rub precisely and not aggressively.

5 – Let the magic happen

Don’t rinse the area for an hour or so. The acid that is produced will remove the rust during that time.

6 – Rinse off

Finally, clear the paste residue away by running hot water in the bathtub. Wash away the residue with a clean sponge if necessary.

Cleaning rust stains off other areas

Rust stains elsewhere in your bathroom can be clean in a similar way – combine baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, and apply to the stain with stiff-bristle brush and pumice.
